These are the rules adopted for the first annual bicycle film festival polo championship, and are pretty much the rules we play with whenever we meet…
• At the start of the game all players must be stationary and in their own semi-circle.
• Once play starts there is no re-start after a goal and play will continue until one team scores
5 goals.
• Teams can register any number of players. However, only three players may play in each
game. No substitutions will be allowed during the game (subject to referee’s discretion).
• First team to 5 goals wins.
• If a player puts their foot down they will need to touch out in the centre of the court (the
specific place will be clearly marked on the day).
• A player can only score with the end of the mallet (from the side is called a ‘shuffle’ and the
goal will not be allowed).
• In the event of a shuffle, the ball needs to be cleared out of the semi-circle before a goal can
be scored. This can be done by either team.
• If a team scores all players need to return to their own goal and touch the goal post with
mallets before touching the ball.
• No throwing mallets.
• We will be playing with a regulation sized grass hockey ball.
• The court will be a concrete five-a-side pitch.
• All bikes that have a freewheel must have at least 1 brake.
• All handlebars must be plugged at the ends.
• The referee’s decision is final.
Gentleman/woman conduct
These rules will be s ubject to referee’s discretion. If the referee considers a rule broken
(either dangerous or tampering with play) they can instruct any player to either touch out at
centre court or circle the court without touching the ball.
Remember, if you do get in the way of play on purpose whilst circling the court the referee
can and will make you circle the court a second time even if the other team has scored within
this time.
• Mallets should not be swung higher than handlebar height around other players.
• Once a player’s foot is down they should try to get out of the way of the ball as quickly and
safely as possible without interfering with play.
• Contact should be ‘like-to-like’ (bike to bike, mallet to mallet, body to body)
